A Thought before a Building: How Does EMU’s Department of Architecture Educate the Architects of the Future?
Assist. Prof. Dr. Nazife Özay, faculty member of the Department of Architecture at Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Architecture, shared insights into architectural education and how the architects of the future are educated at the EMU Department of Architecture. In her statement, Assist. Prof. Dr. Özay stated the following:
“Every space in which human life unfolds is the result of an architectural decision. The homes we live in, the offices we work in, the schools where we receive our education, and urban squares are not merely physical environments; they are spaces that shape our lifestyles, social interactions, and urban culture. Therefore, architecture is not simply a profession concerned with designing buildings, but an important discipline of thought and design that shapes people’s lives, the identity of cities, and the future of societies.
Today, architects do more than designing buildings; they analyze cities, preserve cultural heritage, design sustainable living environments, and utilize the opportunities offered by technology to develop human-centered solutions. They work across a broad range of fields, from public institutions and international design offices to project and construction management, conservation, restoration, and academia. For this reason, the fundamental aim of architectural education is not merely to equip students with professional knowledge, but to educate designers who can think critically, conduct research, question established approaches, and develop creative solutions to the challenges of a changing world.
Contemporary architectural education aims to cultivate a culture of thinking that goes beyond the simple transfer of knowledge. Rather than memorizing ready-made solutions, students are encouraged to ask the right questions, observe, conduct research, explore different possibilities, and develop their own approaches to design. This is because, in architecture, the design process begins not with finding the right answer, but with developing the ability to ask the right questions.
The foundations of this approach are laid during the first year of architectural education. As is the case at many distinguished schools of architecture around the world, the first year at the EMU Department of Architecture is not merely a period in which students adapt to university life, but a fundamental stage during which their identities as designers begin to take shape. Referred to as the “Foundation Year,” this period represents a crucial starting point where students develop a shared language of design, learn to think spatially, and internalize the fundamental principles of design.
The Foundation Year also lies at the heart of the Department’s educational philosophy. During this period, students are introduced to the fundamental concepts of design while learning to observe, question, think critically, and translate their ideas into spatial solutions. Courses in areas such as graphic representation, visual communication, architectural theory, building construction, and building technologies are delivered in an integrated manner alongside the basic design studio. In this way, students bring theoretical knowledge and practical experience together, gaining a holistic learning experience. This approach is not limited to the first year. The design culture established during the Foundation Year is further developed in subsequent years through increasingly complex studio projects addressing the scales of buildings, the environment, and the city. While jury evaluations, collaborative projects, and critique sessions strengthen students’ design thinking, technical visits, workshops, seminars, national and international competitions, and internships provide opportunities to experience the architectural profession from different perspectives. As a result, students learn not only how to design, but also how to justify their design decisions, confidently communicate and defend their ideas, and regard constructive criticism as a natural and essential part of their development.
Offering architectural education since 1991, the EMU Department of Architecture has established itself as a respected center for contemporary architectural education, supported by its strong academic staff, internationally experienced faculty members, and multicultural student community. Students and academics from diverse countries come together in the same studio environment, sharing not only the technical aspects of architecture but also different ways of thinking and universal professional values. This international learning environment makes a significant contribution to educating students as well-equipped architects capable of pursuing careers on a global scale.
The quality of the Department’s education is further assured through national and international accreditations. In 2011, the EMU Department of Architecture became the first architecture department in Cyprus to receive MİAK accreditation, and in 2016, it received accreditation from the US-based NAAB, becoming the only architecture department on the island to hold this accreditation. Uninterrupted continuation of these accreditations demonstrate that the program meets both national and international quality standards and equips its graduates with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to compete successfully in the global architectural profession.
Over nearly thirty-five years of educational experience, graduates of the Department have gone on to pursue successful careers across a wide range of fields, from public institutions and international design firms to restoration, sustainable environmental design, digital building technologies, and academia. The diverse roles undertaken by graduates in different countries stand as one of the clearest indicators of the international success of the Department’s educational approach. Architecture is one of the most significant professions entrusted with the responsibility of shaping the future. More livable cities and sustainable living environments can only be created by architects who think critically, question established approaches, uphold ethical responsibilities, and place people at the heart of design. Architectural education, therefore, does more than provide professional knowledge; it broadens perspectives and transforms ways of thinking.
For nearly thirty-five years, the EMU Department of Architecture has been educating the architects of the future with this very understanding. Good architecture, after all, requires strong ideas before strong structures can be built. Indeed, before any structure is built, an idea must first be constructed.”
