Joint International Medical Program of EMU and Marmara University Presented with an Accreditation Certificate During a Ceremony

The ‘International Joint Medical Program’ run jointly by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty and Marmara University, Faculty of Medicine has been accredited by the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Medical Education Programs (TEPDAD). Becoming the first medical program to be accredited in the Joint Medical Program field, EMU – Marmara University Joint International Medical Program was awarded with the said certificate during an awards ceremony held on Monday, 2 June 2025 at 07:00 p.m. at the Rauf Raif Denktaş Culture and Congress Center.

 

Present during the ceremony were; Nazım Çavuşoğlu - the Minister of National Education of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Minister of Health Dr. Hakan Dinçyürek, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç, Marmara University Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kurt, TEPDAD Executive Board Chair Prof. Dr. İskender Sayek, Famagusta Mayot Dr. Süleyman Uluçay, Director of the Department of Culture Şirin Zaimağaoğlu, EMU Board of Trustees (VYK) Member Halil İbrahim Orun, former EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Abdullah Y. Öztoprak, EMU Vice Rectors Prof. DR. Osman M. “EMU leads the way in higher education in the TRNC”

Commenced with the observation of a moment of silence and national anthem, the ceremony continued with a speech by Minister of Health Dr. Hakan Dinçyürek who emphasized that EMU has shown continuous growth, from its early days as the Institute of High Technology, through periods of rapid development, and culminating in the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine in 2012. Dr. Dinçyürek expressed pride in the recent accreditation of the joint medical program with Marmara University, marking a significant milestone. Pointing out the increasing competitiveness in the field of education, Dr. Dinçyürek noted that gaining students’ trust now relies on demonstrating academic excellence through solid evidence, documentation, and alignment with international standards. He highlighted that EMU’s achievement in securing international accreditation for its Faculty of Medicine—as it has done in many of its faculties and departments—is a remarkable success. Dr. Dinçyürek also extended his gratitude to everyone who played a part in this accomplishment. Moreover, Dr. Dinçyürek reaffirmed their continued support for EMU, describing it as a leading and guiding institution in higher education in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and stressed their wish to see EMU thrive and succeed in all its endeavours.

“Higher Education in TRNC is constantly evolving”

Speaking next, Minister of National Education Nazım Çavuşoğlu expressed his great pleasure in being at EMU on such a meaningful occasion. He extended his appreciation to everyone who played a role in the training of doctors, who are entrusted with our health. Furthermore, Minister Çavuşoğlu highlighted the continuous progress of higher education in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and emphasized that securing accreditation from international bodies remains a key objective for universities. Minister Çavuşoğlu stated that EMU serves as a cornerstone of higher education in the TRNC, and within the university, the Faculty of Medicine stands out as a leading force. Affirming their ongoing support for EMU’s advancement and stressing that gaining international recognition is important not just through accreditation documents but also through the achievements of its graduates, Çavuşoğlu shared the joy of encountering EMU alumni in many countries and underscored how rewarding it is to see those graduates making a difference. He added that it is among their goals for EMU graduates to contribute to saving lives and improving public health. Minister Çavuşoğlu thanked both Marmara University and EMU for their valuable efforts. He also expressed gratitude to the Republic of Türkiye for its unwavering support of the Turkish Cypriot community and underlined that Turkish Cypriots are represented globally through the accomplishments of their graduates. Minister concluded by stating that the Ministry is working diligently to further elevate the quality of higher education and expressed confidence in EMU’s future, especially with its growing international collaborations. He wished the newly granted accreditation to bring success and prosperity. After the speeches, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Kılıç presented plaques of appreciation to Dr. Dinçyürek and Minister Çavuşoğlu in recognition of their contributions.

“A Solid Reflection of Continuous Development”

Founding Dean of the EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty, Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora, touched on the developments since the establishment of the Faculty and stated that the accreditation is a solid reflection of continuous development and that the evaluation period is carried out in line with the standards set for medical training.

EMU – Holds a Privileged Educational Process

In her speech, Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Güzoğlu, Acting Dean of EMU’s Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty, highlighted that the faculty was founded through an innovative international joint medical program with a one-of-a-kind educational approach, emphasizing that the strong infrastructure of both institutions has brought them to their current success. Prof. Dr. Güzoğlu also pointed out that students receive a distinguished education and that graduates are practicing medicine across various regions worldwide.

 

Prof. Dr. Ümit Süleyman Şehirli, Dean of Marmara University Faculty of Medicine, underscored the significance of accreditation in his remarks and assured that the work would continue with this awareness in mind. Prof. Dr. Şehirli expressed his gratitude to all who contributed and hoped that the accreditation would be beneficial for both universities.

 

Delivering a speech during the opening session of the event, Dr. Süleyman Uluçay, Mayor of Famagusta, stressed that EMU is the foremost university associated with higher education in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Dr. Uluçay described Famagusta as the second-largest city in the TRNC, known for its industrious and productive nature, and said that EMU is a source of pride for both the city and the nation. Dr. Uluçay thanked those involved and wished success for the occasion.

“This Certificate Is Your Assurance in Every Step You Take

EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç remarked that this gathering was to celebrate the success born from a shared vision, scientific dedication, and strong conviction. Prof. Dr. Kılıç pointed out that the accreditation of the joint international medical program is more than just an academic validation—it represents a pioneering accomplishment in the country’s higher education history. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Kılıç highlighted that this accreditation stands for quality, foresight, and lasting excellence. He described it as the result of a firm commitment to educational ambition, devotion to scientific advancement, and deep respect for human life. Stating that EMU views education as a vital investment for the future, Prof. Dr. Kılıç affirmed that this accreditation confirms that the university is on the right path. He concluded by thanking all the contributors and emphasizing that this achievement is the product of a collaborative effort. Addressing the students, Prof. Dr. Kılıç said; “Today marks the start of your journey. This opportunity goes beyond education—it’s about making a difference in people’s lives and inspiring hope. You are not only future doctors but also a generation destined to bring healing and transformation across all areas of life. This certificate stands as your guarantee with every step you take”.

This is the Success of a Model Educational Program

 

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kurt, Rector of Marmara University, remarked that the event brought everyone together to celebrate the success of a distinguished educational model developed collaboratively by two well-established universities. Prof. Dr. Kurt underscored the importance of the joint medical program between Marmara University and EMU receiving accreditation for a six-year term. Expressing his appreciation to all those who contributed to this accomplishment, Prof. Dr. Kurt pointed out that accreditation is a reflection of a shared commitment to ongoing improvement and a dedicated mind-set. He added that the physicians trained through this program carry a strong awareness of professional ethics and social responsibility, serving both their country and humanity. Talking about the significance of the accreditation, Prof. Dr. Kurt said, “You represent the most precious part of both universities. The education you receive goes beyond cultural knowledge, it is a way of life grounded in a deep sense of responsibility for human health and strong ethical principles viewed through a global lens. Participating in a joint medical program means encountering diverse cultures and academic perspectives, which you will blend with your professional skills”.

“You are The Hope for This Land”

EMU VYK President Dr. Erdal Özcenk who could not attend the ceremony due to busy schedule, sent a message which said; “Today, we come together to celebrate a significant achievement that holds great meaning for all of us. This accomplishment fills us with immense pride. Accreditation signifies that this program meets rigorous standards and that the medical education offered is trustworthy, high-quality, and rooted in contemporary principles. This certification reflects the dedication, expertise, and vision of everyone who has contributed to this field over the years. From the very beginning of this joint program, our aim was more than just granting diplomas; we sought to prepare physicians capable of thriving anywhere across the globe. The progress we celebrate today clearly demonstrates how far we have advanced toward that vision”. Extending his gratitude to those who contributed to the process, Dr. Özcenk said, “You are the hope for this land. Throughout your medical training, you have acquired not just knowledge, but also a strong sense of conscience, responsibility, and ethical values. This certificate stands as your assurance. May your journey be bright and your spirit resilient”. Dr. Özcenk underscored that EMU remains dedicated, as always, to supporting science and humanity while fostering individuals who embrace universal principles.

 

TEPDAD Executive Board Chair Prof. Dr. İskender Sayek conveyed their contentment on being at EMU and touched on the importance of the said accreditation. Prof. Dr. Sayek stated that accreditation should not be regarded as the sole benchmark; equal emphasis must be placed on the meticulous preparation and thorough evaluation processes. He further highlighted the imperative of sustainability to ensure that the process holds enduring significance. Following his remarks, Prof. Dr. Sayek delivered an insightful presentation on “The Future of Medical Education.”

 

Following the presentation, Prof. Dr. Sayek presented the accreditation certificates to Prof. Dr. Nilüfer Güzoğlu – the Acting Dean of EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Medicine Faculty and, Prof. Dr. Ümit Süleyman Sayek – the Dean of Marmara University Faculty of Medicine. Then, Prof. Dr. Kılıç and former Rector Prof. Dr. Öztoprak presented plaques to those who have contributed to the process.
